However, despite this newfound independence, it’s crucial to remember the people you meet while studying abroad will impact you just as much as the countries you travel to. A potluck
What’s better than meeting new people and eating delicious food AT THE SAME TIME!? Hosting a potluck dinner is arguably one of the best ways to make new friends. If you’re living alone, invite your friends from class and extend the invitation to their friends. If you’re living in an apartment, schedule a monthly family dinner for you and your roommates. You can throw one awesome party without having to put in a ton of effort. Yes please.
Be involved with local community events
Whether it’s a farmer’s market or a carnival, pay attention to new event postings on Facebook to know what’s happening in your neck of the woods. Find a few free things to do and your day has practically planned itself! Ask a friend from class or one of your roommates to explore the city. This is a great way to make friends abroad (and get to know your new home) without burning a hole in your pocket.
Get involved in student organizations on campus
Yes, we know this is cliché, but getting involved at your school abroad is an effortless way to make new connections on campus. Find a club or organization that resonates with your interests and you will be making friends in no time. These clubs often throw fun events and parties which are also great opportunities to meet new people. Glow parties, anyone?
Have a movie party
Sometimes you just don’t feel like trudging out to the nearest dive bar. It’s rare, but it does happen. What your move? A movie party! Grab some snacks, some friends and someone’s Netflix password and binge watch movies or TV shows. Send out a Facebook invite to some friends from class a few days before so they know what’s up!
Fun Fact: Every country has different Netflix selections, so find a movie or TV Show that you wouldn’t normally watch back at home!
